The Order of Saint Lazarus works daily for a better world. The Grand Priory of Australia comprises seven Commanderies centred on the various capital cities. The Order has been in continual existence since the year 1098 and was established in Australia in 1979. Thanks to its members and volunteers, the Order of Saint Lazarus engages in charity work around the world, helping thousands of sick, suffering and needy. The Order is dedicated to the care and assistance of the poor and the defence of the Christian faith and the principles of Christian chivalry. As a truly ecumenical order of chivalry, membership in the Order of Saint Lazarus is open, through sponsorship, to Christian men and women, who respect the values of Christianity, who hold an ardent desire to help others and work for Christian unity. As an order of chivalry, the Order of Saint Lazarus has retained the virtues of nobility but today its members are drawn from across the social spectrum. One such Order is the Order of St Lazarus, initially set up to furnish hospitaller care for victims of leprosy in the Holy Land, but subsequently assuming a military role involving itself in several campaigns against the enemies of Christianity.
